Description
Attempting to use an Offfice365 Connection in the Active Roles Synchronization Service or attempting to configure the Azure BackSync fails with the error message:
Cannot connect using the specified connection settingsConnecting to remote server ps.outlook.com failed with the following error message: The WinRM client cannot process the request. Basic authentication is currently disabled in the client configuration. Change the client configuration and try the request again. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. -
Cause
Settings on the Active Roles Synchronization Service host are preventing connections to Office365 via Remote PowerShell. -
Resolution
WORKAROUND
Open a PowerShell prompt as Administrator and run the following commands:winrm set winrm/config/client/auth '@{Basic="true"}'If no error message is encountered, attempt the operation in the Active Roles Synchronization Service again.An error message similar to the following may be encountered:The config setting Basic cannot be changed because is controlled by policies. The policy would need to be set to ‘Not Configured’ in order to change the config setting.If so, perform the following steps:- Run gpedit.msc in an elevated command prompt.
- Navigate to Local Computer Policy | Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Remote Management (WinRM) | WinRM Client.
- Ensure that Allow Basic authentication is set to Not Configured
- If this option is greyed out and enforced by a Group Policy Object, then the GPO applied to the Active Roles Synchronization Service host will need to be changed to match the necessary settings.
