Can Defender OTP Email be sent via TLS/STARTTLS authenticated mail servers? -
Description
Is it possible to send the Defender OTP via a service that requires TLS/STARTTLS authentication when configuring the 'E-mail token' section of a Defender Policy?
Is TLS authentication supported when setting up an SMTP server to email the token activation code to users? -
Cause
Defender does not currently support TLS / STARTTLS as an authentication method for the Email OTP server. The supported types are Basic, None and NTLM. -
Resolution
WORKAROUND
Using a local SMTP server that does not require STARTTLS / SSL authentication to send email is one option. It may be possible to configure a SMTP Relay such as this example:How to configure IIS for relay with Office 365
