When performing an in place upgrade, there are no options presented to select the desired installation path. Active Roles by default installs on the C:\ drive, even though the previous version installed on another drive, i.e. D:\.
This is by design. Currently, Active Roles will always perform the In-Place Upgrade installation on the default C:\ drive.
Product Defect: 91697 has been raised for resolution in a future version of Active Roles.
WORKAROUND
If the product is required to be installed on another drive (non-default C:\), the product allows you to select the desired path by performing a fresh/clean install. Simply uninstall the previous version of Active Roles, run the installer and import the previous configuration database using the Active Roles Configuration Center.
Active Roles - Quick Start Guide (Steps to deploy the Administration Service, see: Importing configuration data)
here: Active Roles Quick Start guide for the version being used.
If the in-place upgrade has already been performed, and correction of the product’s installation path is necessary, uninstall and reinstall the product, and the new install will allow you to select the desired installation path and specify the newly created/configured database during the In-Place upgrade:

STATUS
This issue has been resolved in Active Roles 8.1.1.
