This issue has been identified as a Product Defect and given the Defect ID TF00763079.
Executing certain Exchange Online actions against an Active Roles service puts the ARS Exchange Online handler in a faulted state, causing an invalid LDAP filter to be generated for Microsoft's IADs Interface search handler.
WORKAROUND
1. Create an additional ARS instance in the environment to be used solely for the Synchronization Service Active Roles connection. Configure the Sync Service ARS Connection to point at the new ARS instance.
STATUS
Waiting for fix in a future release of Active Roles.
