Invalid Byte Sequence Syslog-ng Agent for Windows -
Description
When using the Syslog-ng Agent for Windows to collect logs the following error appears:
Invalid byte sequence or other error while converting input, the sequence will be substituted by a question mark; encoding='WINDOWS-1252', char='0x81'

Cause
There is an invalid character that the WINDOWS-1252 encoding cannot process and thus, this error is logged to inform the end-user that the character in question has been replaced by the question mark character to ensure the log can be parsed and sent to the end destination correctly. -
Resolution
This error and issue will not stop the processing of logs, it is simply informational in nature alerting the end-user that the character that cannot be parsed correctly has been replaced by a question mark character.
This error can be ignored and/or filtered out if desired using the Syslog-ng Agent for Windows filter options.
To resolve this issue one of two steps can be taken.
- Find the log with the errant character that has been replaced and locate the offending application creating the logs. Once the offending application is know the logs can be fixed if possible.
- Change the encoding option within the Syslog-ng Agent for Windows. Under the source options there the WINDOWS-1252 encoding can be changed for a multitude of other options that may work with the character in question.
