When patching software applications the current version can be patched, such as Java 5, but not upgraded to major versions (such as, Java 6) with the standard scan template. If the intended application does not exist on the system, Software Distribution will have to be performed.
Note:Always scan/deploy software distributions with caution so an application is not installed that is not expected. Run the scan first and review results before deploying.
Please follow the steps below to install new software, or upgrade existing software to a later version.
In the example below the workstation does not have Java 6, which will be deployed.
First, create a new Patch Group, name it, and click “Add”:
Select the desired Software Distribution Bulletin ID. In this example JAVA6-31 is selected:
Save the Patch Group. Next, create a new Scan Template, name it, browse to the new Patch Group, and select it as shown below:
Then go to the “Software Distribution” tab and check the “Software Distribution” box. Save this Scan Template.
Select the desired Machine Group to scan with this new Scan Template and begin the scan:
The patch should now be found as a missing patch that can be deployed. It’s recommended to deploy with a reboot of the target machine(s).
