Is it possible to update the CN attribute when updating a user's name, such as:
Current: james
Update: James
Resolution

The CN attribute is set upon creation of the object and can only be updated during a rename action on the account. Therefore, a simple rename of samAccountname, first name, last name or displayname does not affect CN.
Therefore, in order to update the CN attribute, a rename action would have to be taken on the account to update it.
