Web Designer warning messages, e.g.: "A WCF connection is required for checking the status" (4260599)

Web Designer may display one of the following messages:

"No debugging service"

"A WCF connection is required for checking the status"

or:

"WCF connection needs credentials"

"A WCF connection is required for checking the status"

Possible causes for "No debugging service"

• Client and/or server firewall could disallow WCF connection.
• Client cannot verify the webservers certificate for a https connection

Possible causes for "WCF connection needs credentials"

• The client machine running Webdesigner is in a different, untrusted domain than the webserver hosting the selected web application
• The Windows user on the client machine running Webdesigner has no permissions to open a WCF connection to the webserver for the selected web application

"No Debugging Service"

• Ensure that the firewalls on the client machine and the webserver allow for WCF connections.
• Ensure that the client can verify the certificate that the webserver is offering. In development/lab environments that use self-signed certificates, this may require importing the certificate into the client's certificate store.
• Enable the "Debugging" option in the web.config file using WebDesigner.ConfigFileEditor.exe.  WebDesigner.ConfigFileEditor.exe is located under C:\inetpub\wwwroot\IdentityManager\bin on the web server itself.
  
  
  
  Enable "Debugging" then save the web.config file.

"WCF connection needs credentials":

If the webserver cannot authorize the current Windows user for a WCF connection for the selected web application, Webdesigner offers a key icon that you can click to enter different credentials, e.g. from within the webserver's domain.
