On Solaris 11.1 systems after a reboot users cannot log in. Errors such as the following are seen:
/opt/quest/bin/vastool user checkaccess jdoe
WARNING: NSS lookup (getpwnam) for user jdoe failed.
You will be unable to log in with a username of jdoe.
This should be fixed before any other failures.
Restarting nscd will resolve this issue which can be done to confirm this is the problem however on a reboot the issue will return.
Modifying the manifest file making nscd dependent on vasd is a workaround and will resolve the issue.
To be fixed in a future release: Product Defect 664144 has been raised to address this issue. This fix will ensure that nscd starts before vasd on Solaris 11.1. The issue was discovered in version 4.1.0.22547. Check the changelog included with releases after 22547 to see if defect 664144 is listed as fixed.
