For instructions Installing/Uninstalling Quest Authentication Services in an IBM VIOS please see the resolution below.
VIOS restrictions
In order to maintain the level of control in VIOS, IBM greatly restricts actions of an administrative account on these systems. IBM gives an administrator the capability to install from the restricted shell. This brief document describes how to do this.
Installation or upgrade of Quest Authentication Services (QAS) Agent Packages
After mounting the QAS media, one would use install.sh from the media or installp from AIX to install QAS. When working on a VIOS machine, use updateios from the restricted shell. Once the media files are available to the VIOS machine, run this command to either install or upgrade QAS:
$ updateios -install -accept -dev <mount>/client/aix-53/vasclnt.AIX_5.3.<version>-<build>.bff
Repeat for any additional packages which may be needed for your environment, like vasgp for example:
$ updateios -install -accept -dev <mount>/client/aix-53/vasgp.AIX_5.3.<version>-<build>.bff
NOTE: To enable QAS authentication for all services you must restart all services that require QAS authentication or restart the system.
Uninstall the QAS Agent Packages
Login with the non-root, administrative account. Run the following command for each package that has been installed. For example if you have installed both vasclnt and vasgp do the following:
$ updateios -remove vasgp
$ updateios -remove vasclnt
