How to clean up old items in an "external" archive server
SSB's with external archive server, what is the recommend procedure to remove items from the external archive servers?
Data that is not needed can be deleted from external archive servers without causing any issues for the SSB's.
The archived logs are simply put on the archive share in a directory structure. If you remove them with their directories, then there should be no problems.
The directory layout is in the format LOGSPACE_NAME/YYYY/MM-DD where you can relatively easily select which days you wish to remove.
If you wish to view the logs that you just removed from the archive share, you won't see them any longer.
Please note also the cleaning of the archive store is not part of the SSB product and is maintained and supported only on a best-effort basis.
Note that the search interface employs some caching, so it you were browsing the logs on the search UI, that you just were about to remove, and then remove them, and return to the Search UI, then there may be some hiccups until the old search results age out from the cache. Apart from the above you shouldn't expect any problems.
