How to use the batch update functionality to update the "Computer Name" field for Windows systems.
The Computer Name field located on the Systems Management ‘Details’ pane is required for password management and is also used for TPAM’s Autologon feature. If this field is not populated manually with the NetBIOS computer name, TPAM will attempt to determine the system’s computer name when the system is tested, and update the field after attempting to access the managed windows host through ports 135-139, which needs to be open.
**Note** The following instructions detail how to update a single system, when the user is comfortable with the process, the same method can be used to update multiple systems.
To perform the batch update task to populate Computer Names field an admin will need to do the following:
1. From /PAR - Select System, Accounts and Collections | Systems | List Systems
2. Apply a Platform filter to “Windows Desktop” or "Windows" and the System Name (we are updating one System for test purposes in this solution)
3. Click the Listings tab
4. Click the “Export to Excel” button
5. Open the document in Excel
6. Delete the first ROW titled “Listing of Systems”
7. Delete ALL Columns except “System Name”, Network Address” and “Platform Specific” (without modification this will be column ‘AI’ in Excel)
8. You should be left with THREE columns and one ROW
9. Update the “Platform Specific” column with the NetBIOS computer name of the workstation in question
10. Save the file as a CSV
The next steps detail the batch update process:
1. From /PAR interface - Select System, Accounts and Collections | Systems | Batch Update Systems
2. Browse to the CSV file created in the steps above
3. Click the “Update” action
4. Click the Upload button to make the changes
5. Check that the system in question has the updated “Computer Name:” data. To do this use /PAR - Select System, Accounts and Collections | Systems | Select Manage System | Details Tab - verify the Computer Name field has been populated.
Once you are happy with the process, the user can repeat with a larger dataset until all systems have the updated Computer Name data.
The following solution can be used to verify that group policies are correct in a users environment for managing Windows systems with TPAM:
