Description
Active Roles Synchronization Service Workflow Sync Step intermittently fails with the following error:Error details: Synchronization steps aborted. Details: Execution Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.The statement has been terminated.The wait operation timed outSometimes, the Workflow completes without error.The dataset in the associated Workflow Sync Step is very large, including one hundred thousand objects or more. This error may also be encountered in smaller datasets where SQL resources are constrained. -
Cause
Active Roles Synchronization Service queries are not optimized to use the new cardinality estimator (CE) introduced in SQL 2014 and later versions.
This issue is being tracked as Enhancement Request ID 273156.

Resolution
WORKAROUNDSet the database compatibility level on the Active Roles Synchronization Service database(s) to 100 (SQL 2008R2).

STATUSAn Enhancement Request has been created to change existing Active Roles functionality.
