Error: “Ensure that the Administration Service's login is mapped to a database user with the default schema of 'dbo' in the Active Roles database.” (4272156)

You may have encountered the error below in the AR events, when configuring the AR service account with credentials which inherit SQL permissions from an AD group.

“Critical error occurred upon starting Active Roles Administration Service.

Details: Database 'AR_DB' on SQL Server 'xxxxx.DOMAIN' is unavailable.

Ensure that the Administration Service's login is mapped to a database user with the default schema of 'dbo' in the Active Roles database.”

This issue has been flagged as a product defect and is being tracked as Defect ID 170694.

WORKAROUND

Use a Windows user which has with sufficient direct permissions (not one that inherits those via AD group) to perform Administration Service installation tasks in the SQL DB. For a list of permissions, see “SQL Server permission/Configuration permissions” in the Active Roles Quick Start Guide.
