How to remove old Web Interface configurations from Active Roles (4377597)

In some environments, upgrading Active Roles or importing older configurations may lead to a large amount of old Web Interface configurations in the Active Roles database.

This article outlines the steps on how to clean up any unwanted Web Interface configurations.

NOTE: Before making any changes, ensure you make a backup of the Active Roles configuration database in SQL. In the off-chance the incorrect Web Interface configurations or other required objects are inadvertently removed, you must restore the database to recover. As an added measure you may also export each Web Interface Configuration object before deleting it, and then Import it back in if required as noted below.

STEP ONE - Check:

Before making any changes, it is imperative to confirm which configurations are in use as there may be several Web Interface hosts using various configurations.

1. On each Web Interface host in your environment, launch Active Role Configuration Center.
2. Select Web Interface.
3. On the right you will see a list of Configurations in use by name.
   Note: The version is not listed in this view.
4. Make a note of which ones are in use to ensure they are not deleted in the Cleanup section below.

STEP TWO - Cleanup:

As noted above, ensure you have a Configuration database backup before proceeding, and remove configurations cautiously. While it may be cumbersome to navigate through the list in the Configuration Center when selecting a configuration, there is no negative impact on Active Roles by having many configurations in the database.

1. In the Active Roles Console, select View on the menu and then select Mode, then choose Raw.
2. Navigate to Configuration | Application Configuration | Web Interface.
3. Click on Web Interface on the left.
4. On the right pane you will see a list of configurations. Expand the Description column to see the full value.

5. There may be several entries such as Site for Administrators_762_763 (60)
6. Using the Version Reference table below, you can match up which configurations are likely safe to delete. For example, if the configuration has a value of (60), then this indicates the version is from Active Roles 7.6.x. If you are currently running Active Roles 8.1.5, then this configuration would likely be safe to delete if you no longer have a need for backup purposes.
7. Once the correct configurations have been identified for removal, you may simply right-click on the entry on the right pane and select Delete as shown here:
   
    
8. You will be prompted to remove all child items. This is expected and you may select Apply to all Items and then click Yes to delete the configuration.

9. Once the unwanted configurations are removed, there are no more required actions.

NOTE: There may be several entries for Type EDS-WI-FederatedAuthentication-Configuration that should NOT be deleted. These are core required Configurations and will break Federated Authentication and Force SSL settings if removed.
