"passwd: Module is unknown" error message seen on Redhat Linux when running passwd command -
Beschreibung
When changing the password for a user (even a local user) the following error message is shown:
passwd: Module is unknown
This error has also been seen for the root user in single user mode. -
Ursache
The Safeguard Authentication Services PAM modules are configured in the system-auth PAM file, however the libraries are not currently available.
In Single user mode this could be because the filesystem containing the libraries is not yet mounted. (/opt/quest/lib64/security)
Or the libraries are missing. -
Lösung
Ensure that the pam_vas3.so libraries are available
or
Temporarily comment out the pam_vas3.so entries in the system-auth pam file if the issue is affecting local users. -
Weitere Informationen
This same error message can occur if other PAM modules are configured in system-auth and their libraries are not available.
