When upgrading to Active Roles 7.4.4 or later, it is not necessary to break replication prior to upgrading. Due to changes in the in-place upgrade process, new databases are created as part of the upgrade. However, after the upgrade SQL Replication will need to be reestablished, as the newly created databases will be in a standalone state.
If you have any version of Active Roles prior to version 7.4.4 you will need to break replication for in-place upgrade, or when moving to a new server for a new installation.
Guidance on how to establish replication can be found here.
The original databases and replication jobs are left intact should there be a need to easily roll back to the prior version, and are not removed by Active Roles. After the upgrade is completed and verified, the former databases and replication jobs can be manually cleaned up if required.
