Web Application Installation Error: "Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation" -
Description
During web application installation (API Server) the following error message occurs at the final stage:
"Create and install session certificate: Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation."
The installation completes but the API server is not functioning and does not return the normal login page. It doesn't matter if an existing certificate is selected or a new certificate created, the error is the same.
The account which runs the installation has local admin rights on the server and newly generated certificates are in the certificate store. -
Cause
One possible reason would be Anti-Virus software blocking certain types of certificates. The error message is from IIS itself and there will be no hint of an actual error in web installer log or from the error message stack itself. Details may be available in Windows Event log.

Resolution
Review the Windows Event Logs, specifically the Application log, for notifications regarding potential issues.
From there, revise firewall rules and/or anti-virus options to allow for certificate updates.
