Active Roles Sync Service does not handle custom AD attributes

After the AD schema got extended with a new attribute, Active Roles Sync Engine is not capable of mapping users filtering on the attribute value using the Active Roles Connector. The attribute is visible and working in the AD and Active Roles and can be populated through both. Active Roles Sync Engine is also capable of filtering the attribute when using the Active Directory connector instead of the Active Roles Connector.

when running the ARS connector, the following error message is displayed:
Map operation aborted. An error occurred while import from 'OU=Users,,DC=ads,DC=DomainName,DC=com'

Workaround:
Restart the Active Roles Sync service.
