The following error is reported by some users when attempting to login to a HPUX server

By default HP allows up to 8 characters in a username. The failing users had 9 characters.
Please note that this is not an Authentication Services restriction. It is a HP restriction.
Workaround 1.
Consult the HP documentation for a workaround. As a starting point the following article may be referenced.
Workaround 2.
Use a "user-override" file to override the usernames to less than 8 characters. The below example, would allow the longusername@yourdomain.com user to log on with the username shortnam instead.
# more /etc/opt/quest/vas/user-override
longusername@yourdomain.com:shortnam:::::
