Classification helps you and the security professionals in your organization understand the contents of your unstructured data thereby ensuring that sensitive NTFS and SharePoint assets are properly secured. More specifically, Quest One Identity Manager Data Governance Edition - Classification Module provides: • The ability to categorize and classify data from Windows computers, Windows clusters, Net App Attached Storage Devices, and SharePoint Numerous file types can be scanned to provide information on the data in your organization, its content, and the categorization and classification that should be applied based on the automated system. • Automatic and manual classification Automatic classification evaluates your documents against a set of rules to automatically apply categories and ultimately classify your data. Manual categorization enables the appropriate business owner to control how the data is categorized and ultimately classified. • Data security intelligence and control Control data access through the automatic governance of data and policies based on classification. Classification also provides details and trends through statistics that identify the cost of data exposures. For example, you can see files located in a public folder that have been classified or categorized as Secret. • Business data accountability Assign data ownership based on classification policies and enable attestations and manual categorization by the business owner to ensure the classifications are valid. • Classification enforcement Specify ‘unbreakable’ rules that must be enforced and cannot be overridden. • Classification auditing
New Categorization Statistics and Views The Web Portal’s Governed Data Global Statistics is updated daily to provides a clear view of the categorizations that have been applied to NTFS and SharePoint resources. Checking these statistics regularly can help you understand any issues that need addressing. As a business owner, you can access: • A summary of categorized vs. uncategorized/classified vs unclassified resources for governed data that you own. You can drill down further to view the breakdown by file type. • A summary of the number of resources that you own by category for the top 10 categories under governance and by classification. As a Compliance officer, you can access: • A summary of all categorized vs. uncategorized resources for all governed data. You can drill down further to view the breakdown by file type. • A summary of all classified vs unclassified data. • A summary of the number of resources by category for the top 10 categories under governance and a summary by classification. • A summary of all categorization and classification activity in the enterprise on all governed data. You can select to see the information by the category (by default the top 10 display); by file type; and by time span. • A summary of the number of resources owned vs not owned by category and by classification for all governed data across all business owners. You can select to see the information by the category (by default the top 10 display) and by file type.
The resource access report now displays everyone who can access a resource -- regardless of how that access has been obtained. You can quickly see all resource access including access that has been obtained indirectly through group membership.
Improved Performance when Collecting Security for Governed Resources Once data is “governed”, the Data Governance Server will periodically query the agent responsible for scanning that data and retrieve detailed security information concerning it and any child data. The data is then placed in the Identity Manager central database to be used by policies and attestations and in various dashboards and views in the Web Portal. Because these processes require fast access to data, collections are performed periodically and stored in the Identity Manager central database so it is readily available.
