Prerequisites for indirect assignment of Microsoft Entra ID subscriptions to Microsoft Entra ID user accounts

In the case of indirect assignment, identities and Microsoft Entra ID subscriptions are assigned to hierarchical roles, such as departments, cost centers, locations, or business roles. When assigning Microsoft Entra ID subscriptions indirectly, check the following settings and modify them if necessary:

  1. Assignment of identities and Microsoft Entra ID subscriptions is permitted for role classes (departments, cost centers, locations, or business roles).

For more information, see the One Identity Manager Identity Management Base Module Administration Guide.

  2. Settings for assigning Microsoft Entra ID subscriptions to Microsoft Entra ID user accounts.

    • The Microsoft Entra ID user account is linked to an identity.

    • The Microsoft Entra ID user account has a location.

    • The Microsoft Entra ID user account has the Subscriptions can be inherited option set.

NOTE: There are other configuration settings that play a role when company resources are inherited through departments, cost centers, locations, and business roles. For example, role inheritance might be blocked or inheritance of identities not allowed. For more information about the basic principles for assigning company resources, see the One Identity Manager Identity Management Base Module Administration Guide.

Adding Microsoft Entra ID subscriptions to system roles

NOTE: This function is only available if the System Roles Module is installed.

Use this task to add a Microsoft Entra ID subscription to system roles. If you assign a system role to identities, all Microsoft Entra ID user accounts owned by these identities inherit the Microsoft Entra ID subscription.

NOTE: Microsoft Entra ID subscriptions in which the Only use in IT Shop option is set can only be assigned to system roles that also have this option set. For more information, see the One Identity Manager System Roles Administration Guide.

TIP: You can combine the account definition for creating the Microsoft Entra ID user account and the Microsoft Entra ID subscription that will be used into one system role. In this way, the identity automatically obtains a user account and a Microsoft Entra ID subscription.

An identity can obtain this system role directly through departments, cost centers, locations, or business roles, or an IT Shop request.
